Getaway This Weekend To Taba Egypt

By Becky Parry

The small town of Taba Egypt (it used to be Egyptian, then it became Israeli, and then Egyptian again) is situated on the frontier between Israel and Egypt, close to the northernmost tip of the Gulf of Aqaba. This is a major border crossing between these countries, and therefore it is the preferred overnight spot for travelers between them. The whole area is part of the Red Sea Riviera of Egypt.

Do not worry about how to get to Taba, because it is easy. Taba now has an international airport, with direct flights to and from Europe. You can also catch a daily bus from Dahab, Nuweiba, Suez and Sharm el-Sheikh. If you want a more private form of transportation, you can take one of the many taxis to and from Tarabeen, Sharm, Dahab and Nuweiba. The price is about the same as bus service.

An impressive monument east of the Sinai peninsula is Castle Zaman. This memorial lies on the age old road between St Catherin's Monastery and Jerusalem. The view from here is breath taking - mountains stretching into four different countries as far as the eye can see. If it's food you are after, Zaman won't disappoint - their stew made with meat and vegetables, with figs and dates is famous. But don't be in a hurry, it takes a couple of hours to prepare.

Accommodation options are still thin on the ground. The Hilton is quite affordable though, and if you are really on a tight budget, or you simply like sleeping in the open air, there is a beach camp 15 km from town with thatched roofs so you will be able to watch the moon at night while you listen to the sound of the sea. They offer full board as well.

For those who enjoy adventure, Colored Canyon is just 50km away from Taba. Aptly named, Colored Canyon is an explosion of colors and unforgettable views. Just 15kim to the south, is a spectacular Fjord, perfect for snorkeling. These protected waters provide wonderful scenery and coral reefs that you will never forget.

Tour operators in town offer tours to Mount Sinai and Petra from Taba Egypt at reasonable prices.
